Community Service
We envision Western Independence as a community of thriving neighborhoods and businesses where people live, work, love and grow together.
The NWCDC serves the role of facilitator and organizer in a variety of contexts in northwest Independence:
a) partnering with the police on crime prevention strategies
b) organizing four to five large community service projects per year
c) drawing together the leadership of neighborhoods, business owners associations, churches and service organizations to address needs in western Independence
d) advocating for specific community needs
Examples or evidence of program success
1) Participation: In the past year, NWCDC organized, convened or facilitated activities generating 2,972 hours of volunteer participation. At the Independent Sector standard of $17.19 per hour, that volunteer time represents $51,089 contributed to this community.
2) Improvements: We have not tracked the tons of trash and debris removed in the course of our cleanups, however, to cite one project, we successfully lobbied Missouri Dept of Transportation for the replacement of the bridge at 24 Highway and Huttig. The result will be a $5.6 million investment in infrastructure for our community.
